I used to think relationships
Were all about compromise ...
Each having to be willing
To give up a part of themselves
In order to come together agreeably ...
Creating a space where both
Could get at least some of what they wanted ...
While learning to live with whatever
Was important to their partner
However inevitably with compromise
A part of each of us is left unfulfilled...
Something important within each of us
Is forcibly denied

And the innate call to freedom in each of us
Is stoically ignored and supressed...
The ultimate sacrifice
For the harmony of the relationship
I've since come to the realisation
That conscious relationships
Are not about compromise at all ...
These relationships are about
Us each as individuals
Doing whatever makes us feel empowered...
Giving ourselves the touches of inspiration
And clarity to get us through our day
Caring for our own health and well being
Exploring our own individual passions
Celebrating our own personal joys
Making our own heartfelt choices
And following our own unique path to peace ...
Giving up nothing
Ignoring nothing
And denying nothing
Of ourselves
Now if each partner can do this ...
Standing in their power
As independent, loving entities
Respecting themselves
Honouring their needs
Fulfilling their desires
Expressing their creations
And walking their own journey
And then the two can come together

In a shared space
Of mutual desire...
While honouring the individualities of both
While respecting the differences of both
While celebrating the uniqueness of both
While accommodating the priorities of both
Giving acceptance
Giving freedom
Giving love
Giving for the sheer delight of giving
Giving for the sacred purpose of giving
Giving for the pure joy that giving gives...
While sacrificing nothing of themselves
Then ....
It is in this space of mutual acceptance
That the relationship will blossom
It is in this space of mutual freedom
That the relationship will grow
And it is in this space of mutual love
That the relationship will thrive
